Released in July 2014 in China, The House That Never Dies  broke the opening-day box office record for a Chinese language horror film and is already the highest grossing Chinese horror film of all time after 3 weeks into its release.  As of mid August, the film gives a 10-day cume of US$52.7 million (RMB 324 million) with 175,497 screenings and 4.8 million admissions .

The story is based on the legendary mansion at No. 81 Chaoyangmennei Street in Beijing, where local legend says is haunted by the ghost of a Kuomintang official's wife (Ruby Lin). It is believed that she committed suicide in the home after her lover abandoned her around the time of the Cultural Revolution and her spirit has taken residence there.

After its release in July 2014, the film has inspired hordes of Beijingers to make the trek to Chaoyangmen Inner Street in the city's downtown area where the notorious Chanonei No. 81 building stands.
