Grease Lightning hits Singapore

Grease the Musical is now playing in Singapore! I was fortunate to be invited to the opening night at the Grand Theatre, MasterCard Theatres at Marina Bay Sands.

On opening night, Grease the Musical packed a full house at the Grand Theatre – this is the pulling power of Grease a 1978 film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, an age old love story played out in an American High School, and set ta backdrop of 50s rock ‘n’ roll music. In this Aussie interpretation stars Stephen Mahy as bad boy Danny and Gretel Scarlett playing overly sweet Sandy.

A refreshing idea indeed to see Vernetta Lopez doing a cameo as herself, “DJ Vernetta” and her on air persona “Madam Olga” for WAXX, Gold 90.5.

The audience were into the swing of things straight away, cajoled by Ms Lynch, played by Val Lehman, the stern teacher of Rydell High to recite nonsensical lyrics and singing along to the instantly recognizable songs.

No expense was spared on stage props/sets and special effects that’s for sure! There were many costume changes which all looked authentic and I really liked the old American car that becomes Greased Lightning during the first half of the show.

John Travolta is a hard act to follow but the cast certainly managed to master the moves and showed them during the hand jive which looked hard to do as there was a lot of ‘armography’. It was simply amazing to see them all dancing in unison! The cast were lively, energetic and portrayed the attitude and humour well.

Lucy Maunder played her role of Rizzo exceptionally well. Her star power never flickered. She was ‘on’ for the whole performance.  Her interpretation of “There Are Worse Things I Could Do” was phenomenal! Sure she can sing, and hit the right notes but she had pure and utter conviction. I believed her, I was moved. Plus bonus points to her for having a striking resemblance to the original character played by Stockard Channing!

My favorite scene has got to be the one in the boys gym shower room! Half the time I was hoping the towel will drop, I know that's real cheeky of me but I just can't help it with all that eye candy flaunting their abs whilst singing (and am sure you ladies would agree with me too).

In conclusion, the performance was mind blowing – energetic and fast paced, I wanted to get up on stage and dance, its as if the show was sucking me in and I really felt I’m part of it! I would love to see it again!

Take the kids. Take your parents. Take your significant other. This show is fun and has universal appeal. If you are a Grease fan, you won't be disappointed.

Check out the show for yourself…
