Concert Review: Day 2 of Sing Jazz 2014

Kicking off day 2 of SingJazz evening was the Asian Jazz All-Stars Power Quartet comprising of Jeremy Monteiro, one of Asia’s most prolific jazz keyboardist & composers from Singapore; Eugene Pao, arguably Asia’s top jazz guitarist from Hong Kong; Tots Tolentino, one of Asia’s most virtuosic saxophonists from the Phillipines; Chanutr Techatana-nan (aka Hong) from Thailand, one of the most innovative and exciting drummers; and guest vocalist Melissa Tham!

Swedish YouTube sensation Dirty Loops were next to perform. Their happy-slappy disco vibe shot through with spiky syncopation. Jonah the lead vocal has a good voice and is able to hit all notes with ease. They even made Justin Bieber's song "Baby" sound nice! Can you imagine? Don't believe me? Watch this video.

We were also treated to a new song from their yet to be released album (due out in May 2014) "Lost in you".

The highlight of the evening was of course ~ NATALIE COLE ~ the crowd poured in filling up the entire Event Plaza when it was her turn to perform. The multiple Grammy Award winner Natalie Cole has proven to be one of the most beloved performer! Even her stage set was the most elaborate of all!

Natalie Cole looked sensational in a white & silver glitter low back dress. Natalie performed the hits we know and love. Projecting energy and confidence, playing it sincere and at times sassy, Natalie, showed that she's still got the stuff of an appealing show woman who would make her father proud. Her opening song was "Stardust" and with it she has indeed cast a spell on us for we were all enchanted by her beautiful voice. Listening to her sing live sends goosebumps all over me. Her voice is as remarkably amazing as her father's! There is no doubt that her late father still inspires her and is very much part of her.  She did 2 virtual duets’ with her iconic father - "Unforgettable" and “Acércate más” (“Come Closer”).

Ending the night on a high, she did a tribute medley that included, Oscars-style, photos of departed artists flashing onscreen. Hits of Donna Summer, Michael Jackson, Etta James and Whitney Houston were enthusiastically received.

Truly an awesome and unforgettable evening of jazz! Of course having good weather was a bonus too!

Special thanks to Orbis Festival Productions Pte Ltd and Marina Bay Singapore for the concert tickets to the inaugural Singapore International Jazz Festival 2014!
