Blackpaint Review!

Read our [EVENT] coverage here!

Hey babes!

I realised that the beauty products that I have been reviewing are so far considered the “natural” type, like Innisfree, Danahan... and now Blackpaint!

All black paint products are free of chemicals, and are entirely organic. It's funny how mankind have switched from natural, to man-made and now back to natural again. Like fashion trends, skincare trends do change seasonally, and for this decade, I'm guessing au naturale seems to be a phenomenal trend! After all, we ought to be skeptical about artificial products, shouldn't we?

Here's me and fellow blogger, Shawn at the blackpaint event which we attended previously!

I'm really inspired by black paint that I'd go in detail for the brand in this review! I have also added some summarized facts about taking good care of skin along in my review section. Let's be beautiful together-- guys and girls!

Well, let me start off by telling you a short story about black paint! Long post ahead, prepare a mask and a cuppa' coffee!~

Brand Story

The story of BLACKPAINT began with a mother's love, and the search for inner and outer health for her daughter. It took much scientific study, but in the end her quest led to restored health for her child ... and a line of organic skincare that enhances the body's own renewal and self-protection processes instead of fighting them.

When Miyuki Maeda, the founder of Black Paint’s daughter was diagnosed with a serious, "incurable" kidney disease, her outlook on life was changed forever. Her inner fighter was awakened and she realized that the power for healing was in her hands. She would not stop believing there was an answer, nor stop working until she found it, no matter how long it took or where she had to look.

Miyuki-san studied modern physiology and bacteriology as well as traditional natural healing systems around the world. When she learned about beneficial bacteria, she saw the light. Bacteria that live symbiotically in our bodies are essential to our physical function, from digesting nutrients to protecting against disease. She realized that instead of killing those bacteria, we should nourish them so they can do their job.

The dark time of Miyuki's life has now ended, thanks to her determination to never give up the fight for her family's well-being. After the success of her "personal health study," she knew she had to share the benefits of her hard-won wisdom with the world. BLACKPAINT is the result.

And then you must be asking, what exactly is Blackpaint? It's name and appearance does indeed seem rather mysterious to me, at least.

What is Blackpaint?

BLACK PAINT®, an organic skincare brand established in Kyoto 15 years ago by Myyuki Co.Ltd. Since ancient times, plant oil treatments have been taught to be a secret to beautiful skin. Based on this concept, BLACK PAINT® skincare products are made from natural, organic materials which are blended from more than 100 types of plant oils, more than 50 types of essential oils, Kishu Bichotan Charcoal that suitable for various skin and body parts. BLACK PAINT® soaps were sold more than one million in Japan in year 2012.
BLACK PAINT® soap has won the Grand Gold Medal of Monde Selection Award Winner (a globally-renowned award runs by International Institute for Quality Selections, Belgium that evaluate quality of each product and grant themquality label) for consecutively 5 years since 2009, under the category of Cosmetics & Toiletries in Japan.

I believe that a woman that is considered beautiful would definitely have mesmerizing eyes, delicate lips, a toned body, silky shiny hair and flawless skin. Beauty is skin deep, of course. Despite being pleasing to the eye, she should also be beautiful when she talks and walks, and is able to capture the attention of people by her charming yet modest attitude.

Though we know that make-up is indeed powerful and has helped all women around the world to become more "beautiful", I still believe that make-up cannot replace the complexion and radiance of our skin. No matter how much time and effort we put into the make-up process, it is impossible to look flawless and stunning without good skin. Beautiful skin starts simply with cleansing.

Random Photo of me without makeup!

Do you know why is it so important to take care of our pores? We ought to know that taking good care of pores would enable us to have beautiful skin! (Well, your diet counts too) There are approximately 200 thousands pores on the skin of our faces. When the dead cells mix with the oil secretion (sebum) on our skin layers, it clogs our pores and prevents our skin from breathing, which may lead to troubled skin.

If all of our pores are clogged with waste and makeup, how would our face turn out to be? Enlarged pores, blackheads, breakouts…you name it. On top of that, sweat and sebum (oil secretion) are unlikely to secrete sufficiently under imbalance skin condition, thus causing dry, hardened and darkish appearance.

That is why the colour of our skin changes when we grow old! We might then think that, if we wash our faces more frequently, it would better cleanse our pores and then solve whatever skin problems that we might face.

But this is totally not true!

Frequent facial wash may lead to dry skin and enlarged pores. It tends to strip moisture of our face and cause troubled. Moreover, exposure to air conditioning is another reason that causes facial dryness and enlarged pores! No matter how uncomfortable it may feel, I still believe that sleeping with your windows open would be much beneficial for skin and for health.

So, how do we get rid of troubled skin? In order to solve troubled skin, here are some tips that we should follow:

We should,
Clean our pores to minimize the damage that our environment has done to our pores
Consume large amounts of water to ensure that skin is hydrated
Keep moisturized externally as well to prevent lost of moisture

Black Paint which is made from natural and organic material serves as a total solution for keeping pores clean and skin moisturized.

Just a fun fact! Our skin renews itself every 28 days, sloughing off old dead skin cells (keratin layer) and replacing them with fresh new ones. During this period, it is important that we take pores cleaning in facial wash or hair wash seriously. The idea of this method is to moisturize our skin while we are aware about natural turnover of skin.

Now that you know the importance of skin-care, let's start with the skin care steps using Black Paint! Here's a guideline of Blackpaint's pore care regime!

Step 1 – Cleanse the pores
Step 2 – Fix and moisture the pores
Step 3 – Tightens the pores
Step 4 – Protect the pores

If our skin cannot get proper nourishment, it wouldn't renew itself efficiently and problems will inevidently arise. To achieve a beautiful skin, Blackpaint skin care products are advised to be used for 28 days to allow the “normal” skin and renewed” skin adjust to it.

As for me, I have been using black paint products for about a week or so and am already able to feel the difference on my skin! This is because I'm still in the adolescent phase, which means that skin repairs itself about twice as fast (or even faster) compared to a fully grown adult.

Time to start introducing you to the products!

Here's a video to explain better!

Here's me with blackpaint! (Don't mind the unglamness)
The review:
The black paint soap is indeed the “star” amongst all black paint products, and it also retails at the highest cost. I've been using the soap for about a week or so, and I do indeed feel A LOT OF DIFFERENCE on my skin. Pardon me for not posting any photos because my camera isn't as sharp enough to detect the difference in the sizes of the pores before and after!
Nevertheless, this is a photo of my face with black paint soap lathered on it.
Blackpaint does not foam upon rubbing and hence it feels more like a light clay mask when used. This face soap not only does great as a basic cleanser but it also acts as a make up remover as well! I'm rather lazy when it comes to make up removal and it's my most hated part of putting on makeup (I believe it's the same for you as well!). What's worse is that I do not even feel that my face is completely clean after using that bottle of make-up remover.

On my first use of the BLACK PAINT® Face Soap, I found it rather troublesome because of the handling of the soap bar, but hey, 2 typical cleansing steps becomes 1! I find it EXTREMELY convenient especially after a long day outside.

And do not fret, this cleaner removes whatever make-up you have, be it an eyeliner, eyeshadow, and even mascara! What you have to do is to simply just massage your eye area a few times to rid off whatever makeup you have on.

However, this facial wash is extremely irritating to your eyes and IT BURNS. My eyes hurt a lot on my first try because I wasn't careful, please try not to get any of that soap into your eyes!
Not like any other facial wash, this product is alkaline rather than acidic. To give you an idea of how pH works, this is a pH scale to give you a better idea!

With pH1 considered the most acidic and pH14 considered the most alkaline. PH 7 is considered the most neutral, with the right balance of acidity and alkalinity.
The pH of our soaps do have different effects on our skin. One should know that if we come into contact with a substance too acidic or alkaline, we would suffer minor burns. Our skin has a protective layer on the outside, which is also known as the acid mantle. This acid mantle is made up of sebum (free fatty acids) that is excreted from the skin’s sebaceous glands, which should be slightly acidic at about 5.5.

Many things interfere with the delicate structure of our skin’s acid mantle externally and internally. As we age, our skin becomes more acidic in response to our lifestyle and our environment. Everything that comes in contact with our skin (products, smoking, air, water, sun, pollution) all contribute to the breaking down of the acid mantle and the skin’s ability to protect itself. What we consume does the same effect as well. That is why dermatologists would encourage the consumption of alkaline foods in the case of any skin problems. However, a food that is acidic does not necessarily mean that it is acidic in our bodies! Sounds confusing, huh? For example, foods that are considered acidic before digestion become alkaline forming in the body, such as lemons! Animal products might seem to be alkaline before consumption, but when injested, it becomes acidic. Time to cut down on red meat!
After each wash, skin feels extremely clean, compared to the other face washes I have been using previously. After one week, my skin feels much softer and less dry in general, and my acne have reduced! Was extremely ecstatic about that, haha. I also felt that my t-zone has became less oily, and it feels damn good!

My skin is considered to be mildly oily, rather than dry, and these few days I've been waking up with less oily skin. I can finally feel less of a monster when I wake up in the morning :/

Step #2: Pore Fixing; Product #2: Best Water – S$59.90, 100ml

What is it?

A pore-minimizing toner that contains 30 types of minerals that deeply penetrates the skin (epidermis) to nourish and help restore skin's natural barrier to prevent moisture loss.

What does it do?

1. Deeply nourish skin from the 30 types of natural minerals such as Potassium and Magnesium leaving skin feeling significantly soft and supple
2. Instantly hydrates skin and helps preserve its moisture balance
3. Helps improve skin texture and minimize pores after cleansing
4. No alcohol, fragrances and artificial colorants
5. Low irritation

• Best water paired with BLACK PAINT cleansing soap is the best mineral toner for pores.
• We recommend the use of an organic cotton mask with BEST WATER.
• For better absorption, apply a small amount of BEST WATER at a time, rather than a large amount all at once.

The Review:

What I really loved about this toner was that it was entirely alcohol free! I've been searching for an alcohol-free toner for about a month but couldn't really find any suitable ones. Why alcohol free? Though alcohol is able to dissolve most of the oils and disgusting grime on our skin, it is rather harsh and damaging, as alcohol also dries up our skin. A water based one is gentler to the skin and even locks moisture into the skin rather than removing it!

Especially for adolescents' or people with sensitive skin, it is actually essential that we do not use toners with alcohol in it because the alcohol will cause skin irritation which explains the redness on your t-zone and sides of your nose if you use an alcohol containing toner. Using Best Water, I had no redness at all! The product was easy and quick to use, and was so gentle on my skin! Had no scent, and felt very natural and light.

Loved it a lot!

Step #3: Pores Tightening; Product #3: Oil Water Rose – S$49.90, 100ml

What is it?

A dual-layer emulsion that regenerates, protects, soothes, and softens the skin keeping skin soft, supple, radiant and young-looking, while a delicious rose scent uplifts the spirit.

What does it do?

2. Bottom layer of Damask Rose Water provides extra vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to skin

5. Provides anti-inflammatory properties that treats redness and wounds

6. No emulsifiers, surfactants or preservatives

7. Damask Rose scent provides aromatherapy effects

Apply this after cleansing and Best Water application. For best result, use it together with Best Water.

The Review:

I believe that this was one of the most important steps in the whole pore care regime, because WHAT'S THE POINT OF CLEANING YOUR PORES IF YOU DO NOT PREVENT THEM FROM CLOGGING AGAIN?

This is the step where you actually let your pores close and tighten, so that it prevents any further bacteria from entering it. What I loved most about this product was the scent of it! Ms Miyuki Maeda mentioned that 2000 roses were used for a SINGLE bottle! It sounded too prestige to me. The rose scent was just amazing. Not to pungent and overwhelming, and was just a tinge of it. I believe they decided to use rose extract because of its endless beauty properties, and at the same time provides aromatherapy because of its unique scent.

It has been used as a beauty product for millennia. It has been found that Cleopatra enjoyed taking baths with many rose petals in the water, and making facial masks made from rose petals! Rosewater has been known for its many different healing properties for a very long time, particularly when it comes to skin care. It has anti-ageing properties as well, which I would say is extremely important even for young girls like me. Prevention of wrinkles start before they form! The application of oil water rose is similar to that of Best water, which is quick, easy and simple! No fuss:)

Step #4: Pores Protection; Product #4: Water Cream – Rose Lavender – S$79.90, 50ml

What is it?

A water-based moisturizing cream that protects your skin from dryness and maintains moisture all day long. Great as a makeup base.

What does it do?

1. Contains morroco's argan oil which improves skin metabolism and promotes moisture retention

2. The combination of 7 different types of flower oil and polymeric silicon form a protective veil against external environment

3. Natural ingredients provide anti-oxidative effects

4. Maintain skin moisture and gives makeup long-lasting finish

5. No alcohol, fragrances and artificial colorants

6. Soothingly scented with lavender oil

How to use:

The review:

I have never ever believed that a primer/moisturiser is important in skincare as my skin is mildly oily and I never felt that there was a need to put moisturisers especially when my skin is rarely dry at all.

When I used this water cream, I was amazed at its immediate effects! The morning after I used this cream, my face was so much less oily as compared to other mornings, and I could tell that my pores were not as large as they would be. The texture of this cream is so light that you would feel that there is NOTHING AT ALL on your face!

I'm very particular about the texture of moisturisers because I really hate thick and creamy moisturisers that feel like butter on your face (EWW). I loved the smooth consistency, and after you have applied it, it feels like you just applied water on your face (No, I am definitely not kidding). I loved how clean the application process is, because they even provided a mini spatula along with it! (look at the photo above) Besides, this water cream has duo purposes!!! It not only acts as a moisturiser but sort of a primer as well. This water cream can also be used in the morning/day before you apply your makeup. I do not use primers at all because the ones I tried always felt thick on my skin and my skin feels so suffocated.

Honestly, I was reluctant to apply the water cream before make-up, but when I allowed the cream to be fully absorbed on my skin, it felt rather alright. I might not be able to tell if it allowed my makeup to last longer (because I am not a huge fan of heavy make-up) but I could definitely tell that this allowed my concealer/brow powder to go on my skin easily.

It blends really well with my concealer! No more lines/creases etc! Even though I may skip other steps (like 3/4 because I am so terribly lazy), I would put on the water cream WITHOUT FAIL every single morning/evening!

Product #5 Konjac Sponge – S$14.90/pc

What is it?

A 100% natural facial sponge made from vegetable fibre, Kishu Binchotan charcoal (White charcoal) and various minerals that enhance absorptive ability, helps removing excess oil and dead skin cells in the most delicate manner.

What does it do?

1. Kishu Bichotan Charcoal (White Charcoal) Kishu Bichotan Charcoal (White Charcoal) effectively absorbs impurities from water and release natural minerals for better results.

2. Helps eliminate blackheads, dirt and oil effectively

3. Effectively cleanses pores of the skin

4. 100% biodegradable, colouring and additives free

How to use:

1) Soak the sponge in warm water for 3 to 5 minutes.
2) Press out the excess water. DO NOT TWIST the sponge.
3) Massage face/body with the sponge in a circular motion.
4) After use, rinse the sponge thoroughly. Press it between your palms to remove as much water as possible. Set in a cool place to dry.

The Review:

I have been using this sponge every night before I go to bed, along with the Blackpaint! Though it did not completely remove my blackheads on the first use, I would say that it has effectively removed about 40% of it in the past week! Also, it really ensures deep cleansing which I think is very VERY important if you had very thick makeup on during the day. For 15 bucks, I would say that it's quite worth it! Moreover, the sponge also provides good blood circulation when used, and this enabled your skin to have that healthy glow! People, blood circulation is extremely important!

Product #6 Ostrich balm

1. Moisturize dry areas of the face/body

At first I thought that this balm was like any other Vaseline but it really wasn't once I touched it! Though it may appear to be simple and ordinary, the texture of this balm is light and less oily like other petroleum jelly which will mean a less messy process, and that it would feel much better on your skin. If you were to put it on your face, it would not clog up pores as much as other petroleum jellies would!

Moreover, the best part of it is that it acts as an extremely good lip balm as well! I do not put on lipstick on a regular basis so I would often go without any lip products and let my lips feel dry after a few hours outside but now I have this handy ostrich balm! It doesn't leave a thick feeling on your lips (which is so damn disgusting) and that's what I was looking for! Most lip balms in the market have a thick consistency because they sort of compromise the composition of the minerals by making the jelly thicker, which is totally uncool.

The idea of this ostrich balm would be familiar to those who use New Zealand products. Ostrich oil has extremely powerful healing properties, it softens and repairs damaged skin and is even known to be used by princesses to regain their youthfulness!

Well, I don't know how true is that, but it has definitely gave me soft lips!

Product #7 Vegetable oil

1. Removes heavy eye makeup
2. Ensures that eye creases are reduced

This vegetable oil worked really well for my eye area, where it is usually kind of dry, as well as the skin around my nose. It is quite oily, and may be kind of troublesome to handle but I suggest to use this with a cotton swab so that you do not actually get messy! I have tried using this to remove makeup and it does a good job, but just remember not to pour out too much!

Too bad these products are not sold in Singapore yet, but are already in Japan. I suppose the reason behind this is because of animal protection and that it's rare to find ostrich/vegetable oil containing products in Singapore! But fret not, animal right activists, because I believe that as long as the production of this ostrich balm does not involve excessive damage to the ostrich population, its perfectly fine for us to use! And the vegetable oil is simply awesome and I think ALL of you with dry eye/lip areas should have a go at it.

After trying all of the products that they have included in the package, I would say that my favourite products would be the Blackpaint and the water cream! They are like my essentials (can even do without make-up) of my whole beauty regime. I hope that 28 days passes sooner so I can have better looking skin! I suggest that one should at least try the Blackpaint facial cleanser or water cream! Their products are definitely different from the chemically based ones in the market (which are mostly harmful to your skin).

A photo of a happy me with no make-up on after using Blackpaint's products!

Here's my conclusion for black paint's products! I am really thankful to be one of the first few in Singapore to try this brilliant Japanese brand, especially when they were so generous to give us the whole set of products! Do check out Shawn's review that is coming up soon--to see it from a man's perspective!

More information about the brand that you would like to know!
The concept of BLACK PAINT®
Miyuki Maeda searched the world over for the natural materials that would best support the skin's self-healing and protection processes.

• Natural Ingredients
Today we use more than 100 kinds of plant-derived oils, essential minerals and other natural ingredients such as silk, honey and brown sugar, together with various plant oils and essential oils from all over the world which approved by organic certification bodies in Germany and France.

• Pore- care
An average adult has around 20 millions of pores on his or her face. Dirt and oil on pores may cause those pores get clogged and encourage the growth of bacteria which would causes inflammation and irritation. No matter how strong is your cleanser/ facial wash, it is almost impossible to pull out all the waste inside the skin's pores. Most face cleanser use a solvent that removes makeup by melting its oils. Unfortunately, they
also remove skin’s natural oil and wash away the good with the bad. BLACK PAINT soap removes only the makeup, with a gentle foaming film of vegetable oil that lets it slip easily off the skin's surface.

• Supports Skin Microbiota
Human Microbiota is the microscopic organisms living in human body. The human skin is usually slightly acid, mostly due to the effect of sebum secretion by skin glands which contained lactic acid. Like our intestine, lactic acid bacteria act as a barrier to prevent microbes (other bacteria) from entering our body.

Using only natural ingredients without any preservatives, BLACK PAINT® helps maintain the functionality of the bacteria in our skin which balance the skin’s immune system.

• No Synthetic Preservatives
The BLACK PAINT® skincare series is made solely of natural ingredients; does not use any synthetic preservatives, disinfectants, fragrances, colorings, anti-oxidants, or ultraviolet absorbers. What’s more, they can kill the beneficial bacteria that help skin maintain its natural beauty. Through BLACK PAINT® soap, we hope to live in a globally safe environment despite our hectic lifestyle.
• Gently Manufactured
We have worked long and hard to develop manufacturing processes that don't compromise the integrity of our products. For example, BLACKPAINT soap is cold pressed -- almost unheard-of these days. Cold processing allows glycerin, a plant-derived emollient, to remain in the soap instead of being boiled away. Cleansing naturally, it leaves skin soft, radiant and healthy.
